The
name Linux was used at first
only for the kernel written by
Torvalds ,which was exclusively used for
Minix. Later the kernel was integrated into
GNU and the
distribution was also extended on the
GNU GPL level.
This new GNU version became quickly, as the only functioning free kernel, the mostly used application of the 90ies. Quickly the whole operating system became well-known among users as Linux.
The founder of the GNU project, Richard Stallman, tried to maintain GNU´s importance to the system by insisting on the use of the full name GNU / Linux.
Controversial views existed: the GNU and Debian project accepted the name, however, most developers and other Linux distributors clearly rejected it. The reason for the opposing has been according to developers just a standard of comfort. Moreover, meanwhile the most released softwares no more were related with the GNU project.
